The Computer Repair Tech site provides information, hints/tips, "how-to" articles, links to external web sites all in support of students, teachers, staff and administrators using technology.

Set Office programs to save to server space

Here we are, encouraging teachers to save their files to their storage space on the Instructional server. Most of the time, everyone must navigate the Save Location drop-down menu to get to their storage space (AKA, previously was the K:\ drive, now Windows Server 2003 assigns this the M:\ drive.). Here's a fairly painless way to automate this process, which is dependent on the teacher being logged on to the server.

Always Show Full Menus

I despise the double chevron icon in Microsoft application menus! Yes, despise! Show me the whole menu, damnit! I don't want to wait for the double chevron to pick up on the fact that I really do want to select Close from the File menu. Double-supreme-mondo Grrrr....

Here are a number of web links I frequent.

Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks

Here's another great article from Mindi McDowell from CERT. This article very clearly explains what phishing is and how attackers are using social networking methods to gain information about you and your data.

Intro to Linux Presentation

I was asked (over a year ago) by our Web Class teacher to do a presentation on Linux to the Advanced Web class. Reason being CDO web students are taking part in designing pages for some NASA projects and the liaison for NASA has stated that the students should be exposed to Linux and have some hands-on experience using Linux.

So, I did an overview with the following components:

Turing Award Recognizes Women in Technology

The Turing Award (named after the famous British mathematician, Alan Turing) has finally been given to a woman in technology. The Yahoo/AP Science News story discusses how "Frances E. Allen, 75, was honored for her work at IBM Corp. on techniques for optimizing the performance of compilers"

Time to Consider Open Source Software

Interesting article [2] on how schools should expose teachers and students to free-to-use/open source software, many replacements for pay-per-use software we currently try to provide for our teachers and students. A good point this article touches upon is that schools in our district do not use the same version of the basic productivity software, Microsoft Office.

Novell "Client" issues

This page has information, fixes, hints and tips about using networks on our school campuses. CDO currently (as of this writing, 5/16/2007) uses Novell Netware network operating system (version 6.5 - similar to Novell's Linux-based networking stack.) I won't be covering too much about Microsoft networking problems (probably require a site of its own!).

Problem with webpage email link not opening Outlook

Gary (Amphi Technology) provided this fix to Amphi Techs dealing with the issues Microsoft has with its own software. Users were clicking on email links in Internet Explorer with the expectation that Outlook would open automatically (it wasn't) with the Send To line prefilled with the linked address. All that happened was a bazillion Internet Explorer windows started popping open. Gotta love that Microsoft application integration!
