WiFi Troubleshooting/Hints

Just some random notes on ways to resolve connection problems to wireless networks. I'll add to these as I think of them...

Open, Free Wireless Access

More and more restaurants and coffee shops are providing free wireless access to paying customers as an added service. This information is not specific to CDO, but who knows! You might have to check your school email or work on a school assignment (or homework grading and lesson planning) while lounging about in one of our many fabulous coffee establishments.

CDO Library Wireless Internet Access

PLEASE NOTE: The CDO Library Wireless Internet Access has been turned off per Amphitheater Technology Department mandate because Amphitheater does not have official wireless connectivity planned at this time. We are sorry for the inconvenience and lack of a connection for your portable devices at CDO.

Fake Notifications Regarding Viruses and Worms

A teacher recently received this email message in the Amphitheater Outlook Web Access (bold formatted words are my emphasis):

Those Pesky Internet Explorer JavaScript Errors

Thanks to Kenny over at Ironwood Ridge High School for this tip he forwarded on to Technology Department.

We've all experienced those annoying "Debug Now?" alerts that happen when visiting a poorly created web site that uses JavaScript to enhance (?!?) the web-browsing experience. Here's a quick fix Kenny found/put together to at least suppress the alerts:

If you are getting the Syntax/Debug/Scripting error follow these steps to resolve the issue.

Network & Internet Connection Info

We are very fortunate to have a very fast CAMPUS computer network. All PC connections in classrooms, labs, or offices are accessing the CAMPUS network at 100 Megabits. The campus BACKBONE (or the main delivery channel that ties all the different parts of the campus network together) runs at 1 Gigabit (1024 Megabits.) Pretty zippy, eh? Connections to the server and printers are very quick.

Laser Printer Banner Page

How do I add a cover page w/my name on it so I know (and others know) it's my work that printed out? I turned off that option a few years ago and now I'd like it back.

Here are the steps to reset the banner page the preceeds every printing job to a networked laser printer. NOTE: You must be logged on to the school network, not the "Workstation Only" logon option, to print to campus networked printers and the Netware Settings options to be available.

No Pictures-Movies-Animations in Web Browser

A minor glitch in the Novell Netware ZENWorks policies sometimes turns off the multimedia options (images, movies, animations) in Internet Explorer. Here's a quick fix:

Symantec Antivirus (SAV) LiveUpdate

You were not able to use the LiveUpdate feature in Norton/Symantec AntiVirus to update your virus definition information. You were receiving an error message of not being able to connect to the Internet for the service update.

Please try the following update to your settings in Symantec (or Norton) AntiVirus:
