Java Upgrade Problem - Error 25099

I tried running the Java software upgrade on a Windows Vista Professional using the Online Installer that downloads and then runs the Java upgrade installation process. The main upgrade ended dramatically during the Extracting Installer portion with unzipping core files failed - error 25099 error message. The install canceled and brought up the Java help via the Java web site. The error 25099 code was listed as a possible reason for the install failure. Sun/Java states that it doesn't have a solution for the problem. Here's what I tried to get Java to install:

  • There was a link for the offline installer, I downloaded that installer and ran it -- no change, still failed with the same error code.
  • I checked to see if there was an existing Java installation listed in the installed Program list, but nothing was showing in the list.
  • I then downloaded, installed, and used the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clean up any residue of the Java install -- no trace of Java was lingering on the PC.
  • Renamed the Java directory in the Program Files directory to OLDJava.
  • Ran the Java offline installer again and everything installed like a charm.

Some people reported that they killed the jqs.exe task in the Windows Task Manager and deleted files in the Java directory. This might be necessary in some situations, didn't need to happen for me. YMMV

I hope that helps!
